ABSTRACT The evaluation of microbiological quality of tank water at the Institute of Management and Technology campus III Enugu was carried out by using ten samples of water obtained from ten different tank waters. For viable plate count for the presence of pathogenic organisms and organisms indicating organic matter pollution, plating technique of pour plates were used, also presence of coliform groups and Escherichia coli were examined using the Presumptive, Confirmatory and Completed coliform test techniques. The media used include Nutrient agar, Brilliant green bile agar, Eosin Methylene Blue agar (EMB), MacConkey broth and Brilliant green bile broth. The total viable plate count gave 31 X 10-3 cfu/ml for pathogenic organisms and 21 X 10-3 cfu/ml for organisms indicating organic matter pollution, whereas the presumptive test showed the presence of coliform groups in seven (7) samples of water out of ten. The confirmatory test showed the presence of colform in five (5) samples of water whereas the presence of Escherichia coli was shown in three (3) samples. The completed test result revealed a highest coliform count of 2 cfu in one sample of water while 1cfu was
obtained in three (3) water samples for Escherichia coli. The result indicated the presence of coliform and Escherichia coli but from the
deduction, the microbial load was minimal in all the tests. Therefore, the tank water at campus III of IMT is not fit for drinking though it
can be used for other domestic purposes.
